indefensible
I've become a bit fascinated by this word in the last few weeks.
It has hit me been the eyes & it's one of those things I'm going to sleep thinking about.
A quick back-story:
I think we can all agree that the definition of 'work' is changing beneath our feet right now.
Yeah?
The entire conversation around jobs, AI, Robotics, careers, business is up in the air right now.
The entire paradigm as we know it is shifting & the age old question of 'what do you want to be when you grow up?'
I don't even know if that is going to be relevant soon.
But there is one thing that I know WILL be relevant in this brave new world we're heading into at warp speed...
Creativity.
Taste.
Discernment.
Judgement.
The ability to use a blend of experience & even more importantly, intuition to make decisions & be the catalyst for cool shit getting built.
With this topic spinning around in my head lately I was watching a Rick Rubin interview with Steven Bartlett (Diary of a CEO).
Here's a quick Bio if you don't know who Rick Rubin is:
*Rick Rubin*(born Frederick Jay Rubin on March 10, 1963, in Long Beach, New York) is an**American record producer, record executive, and author**. He is widely recognized as one of the most influential and versatile producers in popular music history, spanning genres from hip-hop and heavy metal to rock, country, and pop.
But what's really crazy is he has no music experience & can't play a single instrument. Despite this, he has changed the music industry again & again.
How?
Well he dropped one word at the start of this interview on exactly this:
"Indefensible"
He said that this word captures the biggest 'winners' or 'breakthroughs' in his life & with the people who he has helped.
Listening to your gut...your heart...
Leaning into what you feel pulled toward & compelled to do even if (and especially if) logic disagrees.
But not just:
"Oh that's a bit weird"
Shit that is downright, "wtf are you thinking that makes 0 sense, are you fking insane?"
Aka?
It's indefensible.
When I look back at my own life & career 2 big examples jump out to me that I can align to this:
1) Leaving corporate to go full-time online as an Affiliate
I had my path sorted.
I would have been a Partner at the firm, guaranteed.
The money was good (hours sucked).
I'd done the undergrad & post grad study.
I'd climbed the ranks consistently.
I'd gone to New York & crushed it.
I had over $11b dollars of transactions behind me (with a B yes).
It was all at my feet & one day I just went in & quit.
With nothing more than some google ads & a little Blog to fall back on.
I know at least a few people close to me thought I was nuts, and honestly even a part of me did too in hindsight.
But it felt right.
It was the path I felt called into & pulled towards, however insane it seemed.
That was 8 years ago & what has happened since NEVER would have happened without me taking that indefensible action.
2) Burning a $1m+ business to clear my calendar
I launched my first online coaching offer in late 2019 & from then until early 2021 it cruised past the $1m mark.
Problem?
I was chained to my desk all day on Zoom calls.
Come Q2 2021 I'd had enough.
I ran 1 campaign, sold $45k of a $5k offer in 11 days without calls & was hooked.
I stopped the immediately & have never gone back.
We had a winner, we had a system that was working but it no longer felt right.
So I went another way.
And that shift became the foundation for everything that business has done since...
And no way the Lifestyle Business Academy with it's 1000s of members exists right now if I didn't make that jump.
These days stuff like this fascinates me for 3 reasons:
1) For my own selfish reasons, so I can keep ahead of the game, continue to evolve & develop
2) For my clients so I can apply this lens to their work & help advise them as best I can
3) For my kids...
The world they start 'working' in (whatever that even means by then) will be very different to the one I did.
I want to help arm them with the most well rounded perspective of things possible so they can make the best decision for themselves.
Not what I did, not what Liana did, not what pays best...
What will give them the best life so they wake up every day happy, fulfilled & excited.
Hopefully this fires off something for you that gets the juices flowing.
What have you been delaying, suppressing or ignoring because logic said to...
When really that indefensible decision is the next big move you need to go all in on?
Love to hear your thoughts.
Until next time,
— JC
