On Peace Of Mind In Business
Oct 18, 2024In the early days of my business I thought peace of mind & contentment in the day to day would come from the amount of cash in the bank.
This is the backstop, the protection, the runway, the 'fuck you' fund that means you can do what you want when you want.
This is what allows you to never be behold to a boss, a shitty client, an old offer you want to kill off.
In short, you're in charge.
And don't get me wrong - this is a big part of the game & key to lowering stress, being free, living the 'life' etc etc.
But all these years on, millions in sales & being fortunate enough to have built a very solid financial position through this game...
I've learnt this isn't what ultimately creates true peace of mind.
It helps, but there's some else that really allows you to sleep well at night, to have your mind at ease when you aren't working, to be able to shut-off & disconnect.
To eliminate that nagging anxiety that we all experience as business owners.
All the years on, I've found the major lever to achieving true peace of mind in this game is alignment.
This is where you feel like you're moving in the right direction, your brand is a true reflection of you, the clients you're working with match your current season, you've shed old products, businesses, clients, platforms, you can speak & create freely & the world feels right in your mind.
This is when you truly achieve peace of mind in business.
And as you might expect, this isn't an easy thing to accomplish nor maintain.
It requires constant attention, iteration & a lot of very hard conversations with the person they're trickiest to have them with - yourself.
This requires you to listen to your gut AND the data - not just the numbers.
This requires you to hold the line when things aren't quite working how you want them to be but it feels right deep down.
This requires periods of blind faith, self belief & self trust that you know what you're doing, you're a weapon & you're on the right track.
So if you're going through a season of discontent, unease, anxiety, stress, frustration in your business...
I'm not so woo woo that I'll tell you not to think about the money, cashflow, stacking liquid assets & building 'fk you' funds - I'm a big proponent of this.
But at the same time, if you want TRUE peace of mind - consider alignment & use it as a North Star.
Reflect, review, think, ponder & be prepared to make moves that keep you, your business, your life in alignment.
When you do this you'll achieve true peace of mind & contentment (and quite often the money flows a lot easier anyway).
Here's to you doing things YOUR way & finding true peace of mind in your business, vision & direction.
Until next time,
Jacob
