The Entrepreneur Zen Framework
Nov 22, 2024#1 What I'm Going To Share Today
Today I'm going to share a framework I've developed and refined over years of building online businesses (my own & with 100s of clients)
"The Entrepreneur Zen Framework"
This model helps create harmony between three critical areas of life that most entrepreneurs struggle to balance: Business, Lifestyle, and Self.
#2 Why It Matters to You
There's a crucial distinction between being "rich" and being "wealthy" that rarely gets discussed in entrepreneurial circles. While many chase revenue numbers, team size, and material success, true wealth encompasses something far more valuable - a harmonious life where business success doesn't come at the cost of your health, relationships, or peace of mind.
This framework has been developed off the back of me making mistakes & royally messing this up & then having to figure things out the hard way.
#3 Why Most People Fail
Most entrepreneurs fail to achieve true wealth because they:
- Focus exclusively on business growth while neglecting other CRITICAL life areas
- Chase arbitrary metrics of success they see other people pursuing rather than defining their own measures
- Avoid difficult conversations with themselves & others about what they really want & what is required to bring it to life
- Try to build everything simultaneously without a framework for balance
- Put themselves last in the pursuit of business success & cause terminal damage
#4 The Hard Truth
You can build a 7-figure business and still be profoundly unhappy if you don't create harmony between your business ambitions, lifestyle desires, and personal wellbeing.
No amount of business success can compensate for failed relationships, poor health, or internal misalignment.
The only solution is design & intention while building + consistent iteration & re-alignment between the critical areas.
#5 The Key Components of the Entrepreneur Zen Framework
The Entrepreneur Zen Framework consists of three interconnected elements. We achieve harmony when we align all 3 components:
1. Business
The Business pillar includes, but is not exclusively limited to:
- Brand Development
- Client Relationships
- Financial Management
- Team Building
At the core this is the ‘cash flow generator in your world & your empire that you’re building. This is where you invest a large chunk of each day / week. This is where your interests, passions, skills & experience manifest in a value exchange with the market you operate within.
2. Lifestyle
The Lifestyle pillar includes, but is not exclusively limited to:
- Relationships
- Environment
- Travel
- Material Choices
This is your external reality & world that you create (as opposed to the internal next up in Item 3). This is the world you build that you live in every day, the people you spend time with, the macro & micro location you call home + the material objects you fill your life with.
3. Personal (YOU)
The Personal Pillar is all about you. It includes:
- Physical Health
- Mental Wellbeing
- Energy Management
- Vision Clarity
Hugely neglected by 99% of people pursuing societies image of success this is a dangerous ball to drop as the damage can be irreparable & permanent. Ironically, it ought to come first because without your health in check, nothing else matters.
#6 Deep Dive Into Each Component
6.1 The Business Pillar
Let's start with the one you're probably here for mostly - Business. When you dive deep into this whole model, this is honestly probably the easiest part. It has been for me anyway. I've always found it easy to bury myself in the business, work long hours & ignore the other stuff. You might be different.
When I talk about 'business', I mean all the moving parts in your enterprise that ultimately generate profit for your shareholders... which for most of you is probably just YOU.
The core pillars for me are:
Brand: Everything the public sees & what people think when your name comes up in the industry - your messaging, target audience, marketing, content, ads, all of it.
Clients: This includes customers too. Simply put, the people paying for your products & services, whether it's $5 or $50k. They all fit under this umbrella.
Finances: Not your personal money - we're talking business. Revenue, expenses, debt, assets & managing it all, including those legal obligations like taxes.
Team: Could be 1 person, could be 50. What team you have now, what you're building toward, who you might need later & everything in between.
Role In The Model
The goal is staying aligned with all these areas as much as possible. You'll fall out of alignment sometimes - it's inevitable. But use this model to guide you back into momentum & motion.
Let me tell you something important:
The answer to these 4 areas isn't 'as big as possible.'
I used to think it was... Bad JC.
When you look at this piece within the whole model, chasing maximum audience size, fame, client volume, profits & the biggest team possible can make everything else crumble.
The real goal?
Finding harmony between these key elements so they complement the other parts of the Framework... and feeling aligned & excited about what you're building now & for the future.
It's totally fine - actually, expected - for this to change & evolve as:
-
You grow, change & develop as a leader & individual
-
Life moves through different seasons
-
Your values & priorities shift
-
Your experience & vision expand
I lived this firsthand this past year when my Son was born. I wanted to be there for everything happening for the first time & support Liana as we became parents. That meant adjusting the brand, marketing, products, offers, finances & aligning the team accordingly.
It's not easy - it takes work, reflection & action... But the payoff is huge when you align everything with your highest values & priorities.
For me? I traded minimal money for spending almost every day with my son during his first year on Earth. Pretty cool if you ask me... and WAY more important than 'scaling' just because you can.
Let's move onto Lifestyle...
6.2 The Lifestyle Pillar
Now I'm going to be honest - I'm not completely sold on the name of this section.
It might end up just being 'Life' rather than 'Lifestyle' because this goes deeper than what 'lifestyle' might suggest. But for now, let's roll with it so we can get this into your hands.
This section covers the external world you create around you, separate from business.
We're talking about:
-
Your relationships (friends, family, significant other)
-
Your home environment (where you live, house/apartment setup, owning vs renting)
-
Travel (pretty straightforward)
-
Material (the fun stuff you might want - watches, cars, clothes, tech - whatever interests you)
It's all about engineering your external world how you TRULY want it to be:
Where you choose to live... Who you spend time with... Who you surround yourself with... Your travel patterns - where, when & how often... And the material things that fill YOUR world.
See how 'DESIGN' fits into this model?
Unlike most people, we're not letting life happen by default... Instead, we're thoughtfully considering these elements, getting clear on what we actually want, mapping out what truly matters to us & becoming architects of our own reality.
Sure, this might not happen overnight - some parts could take years... But here's what I know for sure:
-
Your fulfillment & enjoyment in the other key areas will skyrocket when you create an exciting, clear plan for how you want to live & work on it daily
-
Without mapping this out, how can you expect to build a life you love? You're leaving it to chance.
About 3 years ago, I made a decision: I'd never live life by default again. I chose to be intentional & deliberate about all these elements, create the exact vision of how I want my life to be & work toward it every day.
It's been incredible, and I'm excited for you to follow this path too.
Let's move to the final & most important bucket:
6.3 The Personal (YOU) Pillar
You might raise an eyebrow at me calling this the most important section... Especially after I just talked about family, partner & relationships... But stay with me here:
If you don't have your physical health, you have nothing... If your mental wellbeing isn't looked after & you're not enjoying life, does anything else really matter? If you don't guard your energy & keep refining your vision, everything else will eventually fall apart.
About 4 years ago, I hit a rough patch & spent 6 months working with a psychologist. It took me another 6 months before that to actually make the appointment - my ego was getting in the way. To this day, it's one of the best decisions I've ever made.
During this time, I came across an analogy that changed everything for me... Let me share it quickly to show why this part of the framework matters so much.
You know that safety demo on planes? They always say: "In the event of an emergency, oxygen masks will drop from the ceiling. Please ensure you apply YOUR MASK FIRST before assisting minors or anyone else around you."
I'd heard this hundreds of times on flights without thinking twice about it... Turns out it's some of the best life advice there is.
If you don't take care of yourself first, you can't truly help others long term. You might manage for a while, but your capacity will be limited & eventually run out. For life to thrive, you need to learn to be selfish. By being selfish, you can actually be more for those you love.
I just went through this again recently: As Hendrick grows, the house is getting louder & louder. It's fantastic & I love every second of it. BUT it wasn't working for business productivity. I noticed I was trying to juggle everything - productivity was dropping, work hours were stretching, and I was getting distracted during family time.
So I got a private office where I can work each day, get everything done & then come home, put away my phone & laptop & be 100% present with him & Liana. Liana's already noticed a big difference in me since making this change.
By being selfish & giving myself the space & environment I needed to focus... To channel energy directly into the business... I became a better Dad.
It all connects & flows from one thing to the next. But here's the lesson: Start putting your oxygen mask on first instead of always putting yourself second. Over time, this will let you be everything you are now & more for others AND do it longer without burning yourself out.
Remember: if you're not happy, healthy & aligned with your vision - everything else suffers. So stop making it secondary. Put on that oxygen mask... Fill your own cup first... And attack each day with energy & excitement.
Watch how everything else improves from there.
#7 Important Note
Now that you've seen all 3 components of the Framework & how they interconnect, I want to help you get just as excited about the 'Lifestyle' & 'You' elements as you are about business. That's how you create a truly well-rounded life.
Let's take this deeper & apply it to your life TODAY.
Remember - this isn't a one-time thing... It's your north star that evolves with you.
In the early days, revisit it often - monthly or quarterly depending on your situation. Once you're familiar with it, you can space it out (I check in every 6 months now after 3+ years).
Make this part of your regular planning routine. Trust me - refining & working toward your ideal life vision will give you the biggest ROI you'll ever see.
Let's dive into implementing this TODAY!
#8 Implementation
Before we implement this, a reality check:
This isn't about blindly changing everything. It starts with slowing down & asking yourself tough questions in each area. You need crystal clarity on what you want to build, which means honest reflection on what's working, what isn't, and what needs to change.
I've got specific questions for each area, but use these as a starting point. Your situation might need different or deeper questions. The more honest you are with yourself, the more valuable this becomes.
Quick warning: Let's not sugarcoat this. Ignore any part of this model & things can go wrong fast:
-
All business, no balance? You risk damaging relationships & health permanently
-
Nice house, fancy car, but screaming in pain inside? What's the point?
-
But don't swing too far the other way - your business vision needs attention too
The lesson? All 3 pieces need your energy & attention.
The Framework breaks down into 3 steps:
-
Ask tough questions & answer honestly
-
Build & implement a plan (ideally with a mentor)
-
Review & iterate regularly
Let's dive into each area:
Business Questions:
-
Feel aligned with your brand's direction?
-
Actually excited to serve your clients?
-
Getting that 'urgh' feeling about certain tasks?
-
Business model draining your energy?
-
Old offers need killing? New ones waiting to launch?
-
Content still reflect who you are now?
-
Getting too comfortable? Need new challenges?
-
Financial issues to address?
-
Team changes needed?
Your business will likely change significantly every couple years - that's normal. Don't fear big shifts in audience, messaging, offers, or team. Use these questions to guide you & then let the answers guide your daily actions & habits to build the NEW version that is aligned to who you are today & who you’ll become in the future.
Lifestyle Questions:
-
Keeping your partner in the loop?
-
Need more time for relationships?
-
Social circle need adjusting?
-
Happy with your micro (home) & macro (location) environment?
-
Travel plans to lock in?
-
Healthy relationship with material things?
-
Avoiding any important conversations?
Remember - these changes often affect others, so communication is key. You have to ask for what you want. You must design your lifestyle otherwise you’ll end up living by default. I’m grateful for the work I have done here every morning when I sip my coffee looking over the ocean because I made it MY reality.
You Questions:
This is the toughest part - the conversations with yourself:
-
Health being prioritized? REALLY?
-
Medical issues you're avoiding?
-
How's your headspace daily?
-
More time to yourself?
-
Need to talk to someone?
-
Vision still exciting you?
This is about how you feel in silence, looking in the mirror.
When you nail this part - your physical & mental health, your vision, your energy - everything else flows better.
Most competitors avoid this deep work, burying themselves in business & material stuff. They can't sustain it. But when you reconnect with yourself & build that clear vision?
You become unstoppable.
#8 Final Thoughts
With all this said, I ask you to please:
-
Seek balance & harmony between these 3 elements
-
Get selfish & look after yourself first - it’s the only way
-
Ask yourself hard questions & build your plan around the answers starting today
-
Review this regularly (move often at first) and keep refining all 3 elements
This model is a by-product of years of my own personal journey & exploration into all of these areas…
I am so incredibly grateful I put the time & energy into this.
I know you will be too.
Until next time,
JC
